Dear Olivia Jade
We’re sure many of you are familiar with the social media influencer Olivia Jade, Lori Loughlin’s daughter. These past two weeks, she has gotten herself into a little bit of a pickle. When catching up on news, we came across articles talking about a college admissions scandal. At first, we were pretty confused as to what was going on, so here we’ve compiled a rundown of the situation for your convenience:
Federal officers have charged dozens including celebrities such as Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman, and many others for bribing California universities to ensure their children are accepted and enrolled. Up to 33 parents paid massive sums to universities such as Stanford, Yale, UCLA and USC. All was led by a man named William Singer. He obtained false scores and records that had major impacts on SAT and ACT scores. Singer’s clients paid him between $200,000 and $6.5 million dollars.
Many parents would introduce their children as possibly being a student-athlete. Certain stock photos were used to fool universities into thinking they were receiving elite athletes. Most parents were charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest-services mail fraud. Others, including athletic coaches and college exam administrators, were accused of accepting bribes. In a statement, USC said it is carrying out internal investigations on current and former employees who have been charged “and will take employment actions as seen appropriate.”
A total of 50 people, so far, have been charged in this admissions scheme. Slightly over half of those have been taken into custody as of Tuesday. Huffman could be released on a $250,000 bond while Loughlin’s husband could be released on a $1 million bond. As for Lori Loughlin, she has not been arrested. Bribe payments were disguised as charitable payments to William Singer’s foundation. In many instances, the children and students taking these exams were unaware that their parents had arranged for the cheating.
After reading the exposure of Olivia Jade’s involvement, she lost her brand deals with Sephora, Marc Jacobs, Lulus, Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics and many more. Most of these companies have no plans to ever work/partner with her again, and USC has declined to comment on the status of her registration in the university.
