The Rebirth of Crocs

The year is 2019. A Facebook event to raid Area 51 just happened. Billie Eilish is using the sounds of an Easy Bake Oven to produce chart-topping hits. In a time when innovation is at its peak, why the hell are Crocs reemerging?!

Yes, we will admit we did dabble in this trend back in 2007. But, that was more than ten years ago! We distinctly remember the legendary purple Hannah Montana Crocs adorned with rhinestones and tiny charms; no fashion accessory will ever top that.

Recently, the plastic shoe is returning to pop culture. Initially repopularized among athletes and high schoolers, it seems celebrities and luxury designer labels are taking the concept to runways and social media alike.

Ariana Grande recently posted a mirror picture on Instagram with white crocs and thick white socks. Of course, she managed to stunt on her followers by throwing over a cute oversized crew neck to complement. The Crocs and socks moment was also spotted on Justin Bieber. He paired the shoes with a monochrome gray outfit.

Yet, in terms of influence, the biggest celebrity to cop the trend may have to be North West. With Yeezy’s 2020 drop, North styled her father Kanye West’s collection with some youthful excitement. A variety of labels are coming up with different interpretations of the shoe.

Scottish designer Christopher Kane initialized the shoe’s entrance into the luxury industry by collaborating with Crocs in 2017. The collection highlighted embellished jewels and large gemstones on the shoe while still managing to keep the trend in theme with Crocs original branding. Christopher Kane truly changed the game by transforming the idea into more of a professional and adult accessory.

Balenciaga first premiered their interpretation of Crocs by literally elevating it. The platform Balenciaga Crocs were neon pink embellished with various nostalgic charms. Not to mention, this designer’s version made it to the MET’s annual fashion exhibit, “Camp,” in 2019. If you feel very passionate about this evolution, the Balenciaga version retails for $850.

Although very controversial, we challenge you to take this movement to the next level. Voice your opinions and try to be open-minded. Trust us, we went through a total identity crisis learning to accept fashion’s newest reemergence as well.

Are Elon crocs a thing too? Seems like it! The Edge Fashion Editor Caroline Saviano has hot pink Crocs, which she personalized by spelling out ‘ELON’ in gems and adding some other fun pops of color.
