Now that weekends look slightly different at Elon, and anywhere really, more and more people have been wanting to spend more time outside. Luckily for us, being outdoors is incredibly good for our mental health, which is something we could all prioritize right now!

So, you want to go on a camping adventure and don't know where to start? Well, let’s walk through some of the most important things you should know before you set out on an exciting fall weekend getaway.

Step One: Pick a spot, and do research on the area

You want to look for all the important information, like if campfires are allowed. Do you have to have a bear canister to store scented stuff? What about toilets? Does the campsite even have toilets? All of these are questions to take into consideration when planning your camping trip.

Once you have picked a general location where you want to camp out, look up camping grounds and facilities in that area. Let’s say you want to head to Asheville, North Carolina, for a weekend outdoors. All you need to do is Google “beginner camping spots near Asheville, NC.” You will find so many blog posts and a ton of advice (and possibly even a few Facebook groups)!

Step Two: Know what gear you will need

Obviously, you know you need basics like a tent, sleeping bag and water. But there are other necessary items that may not be so obvious. For example, what kind of clothing should you bring? This, once again, is where we will encourage you to take advantage of your friendly search engine. Start by searching the weather in your designated camping area. The fall weather means that evenings can be a little chilly, so it would be in your better interest to pack clothes for layering. Don't just bring your biggest and warmest jacket. Bring plenty of layers so that you can create a comfortable temperature for your body when hanging at the camp spot or sleeping in your tent.

If you aren't sure on all the camping gear necessities, check out Elon Outdoors Equipment Rental site for rental options, or head to your local outdoor recreation retailer to pick up all you could need! Also, mark our words when we tell you that you will ALWAYS need a rain jacket.

Step Three: Plan for a fun time

Normally, when you are out camping somewhere, cell service just won't be there! So, pack some games and maybe some drinks, and bring all your pals! The unique thing about camping is that card games─and all games, really─are instantly more fun. Sometimes it’s your only source of entertainment for hours, and we can assure you that bringing a deck of cards is always a good idea.

And, if you’re wanting to spruce up your camping spot, bringing Eno Twinkle Lights is key. These lights are designed to be brought camping─they are battery powered and lightweight! It’s always nice to have a source of light when the sun sets and the temperature drops.

If you’re looking to set out for a little weekend getaway in the woods, it’ll take some time to plan and research all the necessities─but it’ll totally be worth it. Make sure to ask around to see if anybody has suggestions or tips on great places to go. North Carolina is an incredible place to explore, so take advantage of the glorious fall weather and sleep under the stars for a night or two!
