AKPsi: Not Just For Business Majors

When you ask about what Alpha Kappa Psi is, you’re likely met with an answer similar to “a business fraternity,” but what does this really mean? Most students assume that the “business” aspect of the organization means that it’s limited to students pursuing majors that fall under the business school. However, this is not the case.

According to the national organization’s website, Alpha Kappa Psi is a “professional co-ed business fraternity,” but the fraternity looks to include students from all majors to include differing perspectives to help brothers grow. To establish a sense of unity, the fraternity refers to all members, male or female, as “brothers”

The widespread misconception that AKPsi is strictly for business majors deters students from other disciplines from applying.

“I think that the rebrand from a ‘business fraternity’ to a ‘professional fraternity’ has helped a lot but people need to understand that professional and business are not the same thing,” says Alex Pirsos ‘21, the fraternity’s president. “Professional is for everyone.”

The organization has succeeded in increasing applications from majors outside of the business school, but is still looking to grow. Non-business majors bring a lot of value to AKPsi, and communications students, for example, “have similar skills to those of the business school but execute them in a totally different way,” says Pirsos. These differences in perspective are what help the fraternity best prepare students for success.

AKPsi is intended to build skills in the brothers and prepare them to enter the working world. Brothers work on presenting and communicating ideas, public speaking, creating a resume, conducting themselves in mock interviews, and even creating a LinkedIn page. “All of these skills and activities are done to build confidence,” Pirsos explains.

The organization experiences its greatest growth through word of mouth recommendations. By having brothers share their experiences with their friends, they reach a wider audience which leads to additional perspectives from all kinds of majors seeking to join the fraternity.

Overall, Pirsos would like to emphasize that “these skills and resources are transferable across all majors.” At the moment, they have students from almost every school on campus, a testament to their well-rounded nature.
