Our Review: Pilot Cove, Pisgah’s Luxurious Forest Cabin Retreat

The mountain ranges spanning the southeastern region of the United States, as well as the nature surrounding them, are as much of a sight to see as their big-name counterparts located out West. If you ask us, it’s because of the hidden gems comprising the area, and Pilot Cove is one of them.

Located at the entrance of Pisgah National Forest, just minutes outside of downtown Brevard, North Carolina, Pilot Cove gives ‘forest chic’ a whole new meaning. This attractive bunch of luxury cabins are perfectly dispersed throughout the woods, each offering intimate privacy and breathtaking balcony views.

Though occupying forested terrain and middle-of-nowhere seclusion, these cabins are finished and finely decorated with touches of modern luxury─local artwork and tailor-made furniture, to be exact. Though varying in size, each cabin sports a muted green painted coat that perfectly complements its earthy-toned backdrop, near-leveled roofing, modernized wide-plank paneling and a spacious wooden balcony offering panoramic views of leafy skylines, which can be admired from none other than a handcrafted adirondack chair, of course.

As expected, the cabin interiors match its befitting exterior, featuring high ceilings and wooden accents throughout─flooring, tables and bed frames alike─most of which were probably sourced from within Pisgah itself. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors to the balcony welcome beaming natural light and glimpses of the multi-colored foliage decorating the surrounding trees, while heated concrete flooring, cool white linens and cozy, custom furnishings attract those in need of a serene getaway.

Mornings here can be enjoyed with a warm cup of coffee, refreshing mountain air on the balcony, and gazes over the ever-scenic Pisgah. During the day, the natural amenities offered are truly endless. Between Pilot Cove’s on-site and nearby trails, waterfalls and scenic overlooks, your itinerary will be chock-full of things to do─and see. And while recreational activities are a must in such a locale, strolling through downtown Brevard, voted one of the nation’s most charming mountain towns, must also be an item on your to-do list. Though small, the downtown offers a variety of quaint boutiques, mountain apparel shops and unpretentious cafes. Not to be biased, but Jordan Street Cafe is our favorite─and definitely the most delicious.

And, due in large to its location─just an hour south of Asheville, North Carolina, which is more famously referred to as “Beer City USA”─a trip to Pilot Cove almost always requires some kind of brewed experience to conclude your activities-filled day. And by ‘almost always,’ we mean always. And, lucky for vacationers, the surrounding area is brimming with world-class breweries─one of which, Ecusta, is even within walking distance of the cabins.

If you’re going to make the trip─and we highly recommend that you do─we advise booking a cabin during the peak season, which we think is when the fall colors make landfall, or late September through late October. But even if you visit during the off season, or January through March, the amenities will still be available. And the cabins? Still cozy as ever. Not to mention, the prices are also largely reduced during the off season.

So, whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a friendly retreat to the mountains, a place to completely immerse yourself in the wonders of nature, or a home base for your weekend-long outdoor excursion, there is truly no better place to be than Pilot Cove, where nature’s beauty and modern luxury are constantly at your disposal.
