What to Wear Abroad: Functionality and Fashion

One of the first things many students notice when attending their first class abroad is that local students aren’t wearing sweatpants or oversized sweatshirts (crazy, we know). Instead, they’re dressed in skirts, plaid or pleated pants and maybe jeans. The habit of dressing up to explore cities or even just attend class while abroad is contagious, catching eyes from afar and boosting your confidence.

Popular trends throughout Europe include chunky sneakers, statement jewelry, bold patterns and form-fitting attire. Every city has a unique accent to these trends, but the concepts are versatile.

Avid fashionista Claudia Hedrick studied abroad in the trendy and vibrant city Barcelona. Throughout the semester, Hedrick tailored her outfits for the various cities she visited. She created simple outfits that were spiced up with bold statement pieces and subtle colors.

“Europe really helped my style evolve and grow. It made me excited every day to get up and get dressed in something cute because I was constantly inspired by not only all the fashion I passed in the streets but also by all the art around the city,” Hedrick said.

Hedrick purchased some of her favorite statement pieces—such as fuzzy hats, tight leather boots and flare plaid pants—from European chain stores, including Bershka, Zara, Stradivarius and Mango.
