Y2K: The Return of Quirky Fashion

We’ve seen the comebacks of 70s bohemian, 90s grunge and even 60s mod. Now, it’s time for the revival of early 2000s fashion, also known as the Noughties.

If you were to ask me if I thought this era of fashion would come back into style, I would have said, “Nuh uh. No way.” It could be because I considered myself too young for the clothes I wore when I was younger to now be considered vintage. Or, it could be because this was an era of fashion that was deemed questionable by many.

Despite how we feel about the early 2000s fashion coming back in style, it’s definitely the new trend. So say goodbye to overalls and flannels and say hello to velour jumpsuits. Here is a guide to how to achieve the early 2000s look.

Low Rise Jeans

For years, high-waisted jeans have ruled our closets. It’s not a shock; high-waisted jeans create a cinched waist that is flattering with any outfit. However, on the rise now is the low rise jean, which sits perfectly on your hip bones and can be paired nicely with a cropped tee. You can always find a good pair of authentic low rise pants on Depop.

Lace Camis

If you are looking for a top to go with your low rise jeans, have no fear: The lace cami is here. Lace camisoles have been popping up everywhere on social media. Influencers on TikTok have been plugging where to find these envied tops. Usually coming in bright colors and unique patterns, the lace cami was a huge staple of the early 2000s. Kitten Heels

Also described as “flip flop heels,” kitten heels are not just for special occasions or the office. These modest heels are ideal for anyone who is intimidated by the thought of wearing wedges for their next girls’ night out. Kitten heels can be paired with outfits for any occasion, from going to class to date night. Grab a pair at Urban Outfitters and ASOS.

Wrap Skirts

It felt like every girl in the early 2000s owned this closet essential. Wrap skirts are easy to slip on when you want to dress up a bit but don’t want to put in loads of effort. These skirts can be dressed down with a graphic tee and sneakers or dressed up with a cardigan and a kitten heel. And don’t worry, you won’t have to put it over your jeans like the queen of early 2000s fashion, Ashley Tisdale. Find a similar look at Urban Outfitters and Belk.

Brown

Although typically seen as just a color, brown is a difficult concept in the fashion world. While people don’t tend to gravitate toward brown in fashion today, it was a staple of fashion in the early 2000s. Whether it was brown culottes or a brown corduroy skirt, brown was certainly not considered ugly. Grab a pair of brown pants at Princess Polly or Brandy Melville.

Graphic Tees

Who doesn’t love a good graphic T-shirt? Though graphic T-shirts never went out of style, the way we wear them has changed over the years. Today, most would sport a baggy band tee from Urban Outfitters with shorts to achieve the T-shirt dress look. In the early 2000s, graphic tees were normally more fitted and cropped and had a quirky quote on them. Think Chad Danforth from High School Musical. We are starting to see the comeback of these kinds of graphic tees. Extra points if your tee includes sparkle letters. Get yours at Forever 21.
