The Astrology Bloom
Astrology has gained a lot of recognition in recent years with the rise of social media networks. Whether it’s from tweets, memes on instagram, of Tik Tok videos– astrology is everywhere. While it may not be looked upon as factual by modern-day scientists, it serves a unique purpose. Astrology is a social tool.
Once upon a time, astrology was used to understand our Earth. Ancient Babylonians used to stargaze just like us! However we gaze up at the moonlit sky to get in our romantic feelings, but Babylonians did it for science. They discovered that stars move in patterns. A discovery like this was absolutely groundbreaking, especially for back in the B.C. days without modern inventions such as the telescope. They also learned that the moon affects the tides of the ocean. With the possible information that could be gathered from watching the sky, Babylonians figured they could use the stars to understand and predict the chaos on Earth.
Babylonians officially became the first astronomers, being able to predict eclipses and noting star patterns. Over 2000 years later, Western astrology started correlating sun signs to the seasons. This is why we all have one of the 12 sun signs. Our sun sign (the sign most people refer to or identify with when asked) only considers the position of the Sun at the time of one’s birth, our sign is tied to the time of the year we are born. It is said that this sign describes the basic nature and personality traits that remain constant through life.
There was one major problem with astrology. It was built upon the idea that everything in our universe revolves around Earth. People discount astrology significantly due to this discovery. Astrologists were able to introduce different types of signs to people such as the moon sign and ascendant sign to further elaborate on an individual’s identity. There is so much more to be discovered in the realm of astrology, such as the different house placements and signs specific to planets.
Today we have social apps to thank for creating and bringing together a community of people interested in astrology. This group of people has grown so wide that it’s difficult not to stumble upon mentions of astrology and signs on social media. The awareness of astrology has spread so wide that most people do know their sun sign when asked.
Whether or not you believe in astrology, it does not really matter if it is true or not. What matters is that astrology is a language for people to use to communicate who they are to others and how they understand themselves. It gives people an avenue to communicate how they see themselves and others. Astrology is powerful in the way it connects people. Whether you’re an air, earth, fire, or water sign– we have astrology to thank for our ability to understand and relate to each other.
