How to Achieve the Perfect Slick Bun

At The Edge, our favorite hairstyles are the ones that take two minutes to do, but look like they took us 2 hours. This style can look daunting at first glance, but trust us, if we can do this style, so can you. Summer 2021 was the summer of the *model-off-duty look*: slouchy jeans, chunky sneakers and a tight crop top. But no model-off-duty look is complete without a slick bun, which has been so popular for every occasion this past summer and fall. If you’ve looked at any pictures of Hailey Bieber, Bella and Gigi Hadid, and pretty much any other model or celebrity, you’ve probably noticed their effortless slick bun hairstyle. This is the easiest updo to do when you have no time but want to look put together, and we especially love it when we have greasy hair. Read carefully to learn exactly how to master this look.

There are a few things you’ll need first:

Regular, Everyday Brush

Your everyday brush will work perfectly!

Hair Gel

You can really buy any hair gel you prefer, and you’re only going to need a little bit of it. But here’s one of our favorites that you can buy on Amazon.

Smoothing Brush

You’re really going to need a smoothing brush to achieve this look— a regular wide bristle brush really won’t cut it. We also recommend getting one with a tip on one side so you can easily part your hair. Here’s one we purchased on Amazon.

Hair Tie

Any hair tie works, but try to get one that matches your hair color!

How-to:

  1. Part your hair in the middle. Use the tip of the smoothing brush to make the part clean.

  2. Use your regular, everyday brush to messily put your hair in a bun. Still keep the middle part, but only keep about an inch or two before combing the rest of the hair back.

3. Put a little bit of gel on your hands and start working it into your hair to smooth everything out (a little gel goes a long way!)

4. Use your smoothing brush to smooth the gel and any fly-aways.

5. Re-do the bun when your hair looks smooth and slick

Tip: Put the bun in the middle of your head, not too low, not too high, to accentuate the structure of your face!
