How to Get the Smoothest Shave Ever

Dreaded razor burn? Itchy stubble? When not done properly, shaving can be a chore with uncomfortable consequences that make you wonder if it’s even worth it. The question of ‘to shave or not to shave’ is a personal decision, but if you opt for the smooth vibe, you may as well have the best results possible. Here are some of our best tips for shaving!

Exfoliate before you shave

To some, this may seem like a no-brainer. But to others, this could be revolutionary. Many exfoliate after they’re done shaving to get rid of the dead skin not scraped off by the razor. But, this is actually counterproductive. Exfoliating before shaving gets rid of all the dry and dead skin before you even come into contact with the blade. Your skin will already be smooth, and your razor can just focus on removing the hair instead of getting clogged with flaky skin.

Use a men’s razor regardless of your gender

This is a hack that many women swear by. Many think it’s because the men’s razors have sharper blades, but it’s actually because the blades are compacted tighter together within the razor to cut through coarse hair (like a beard). If you have naturally thicker hair, a razor marketed towards men may work better to get the closest and most accurate shave.

Never dry-shave

This sounds like a given, but we’ve all been on a time crunch where we just need to quickly shave before heading out the door. This is a big no-no. Dry shaving will irritate your skin and encourage razor burn. Making sure your skin has been thoroughly soaked in water will soften the hair and make it easier for your razor to glide across the surface of your skin, which will make it less likely that you’ll get cut.

Remember to moisturize after

Your skin just went through the trenches having a number of compacted blades run across it. To keep it silky smooth and prevent dryness, hydrate your skin with lotion or body butter directly after shaving. An amazing one that we recommend is the body yogurt by the Body Shop. You can apply this product while your skin is still damp, and it absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue.

Don’t skimp on the shaving cream

Be sure to splurge a bit for some shaving cream. Using regular ole soap won’t properly condition your skin as well as shaving cream and you’ll be more likely to cut yourself or develop razor bumps afterward.

Change your razor head often

It’s recommended that you switch out your razor head after 5-10 shaves depending on the thickness of your hair and how big of an area you’re shaving. After a while, razor blades will get rusty and dull. These are two qualities that you definitely don’t want when you’re shaving. A rusty or dull razor will be more likely to cut you and overall will give you an uneven shave that won’t be as close as you want.

If you choose not to shave, that’s cool. But if you do, be sure to get the best shave possible so you’ll be able to shave less often and have longer-lasting smooth skin!
