The Best Primer for You

Primer is an essential step in daily makeup application to ensure your makeup stays on and looks gorgeous even after your busy day. We’ve compiled our favorite different types of primer so you can decide which works best with your skin and makeup routine.

Color Correcting

Color correcting primers come to mind first while thinking about primers. They come in many different colors that each serve their own purpose. Green primers are made to disguise redness on the skin, like blemishes or even sunburn. Purple primer contrasts the yellow in many skin tones to give the skin a more glowy look. Pink primer makes the skin look healthier and luminous. Yellow primer conceals the blue undertones on the skin caused by blood vessels, especially around the eyes. It can also add warmth to the skin tone. You can also mix-and-match these color-correcting primers by using different ones on different areas of your face, depending on what you need.

Illuminating

Illuminating primers help to ensure your makeup looks more like skin instead of a layer of paint. You can apply them over your whole face for an all-around glow, or just dab some on the high points of your face (nose, brow bone, cheekbone) to add dimension to your makeup look. Even if you don’t feel like wearing foundation, you can still put on an illuminating primer to add some life to your skin.

Mattifying

Mattifying primers do exactly what you’d think they do: give your makeup a matte finish. While today’s makeup trends are dominated by a more natural and glowy makeup look, you may still find yourself in need of a matte primer one day. These can be helpful when you need your makeup to last all day, even with sweat and oils building up. Mattifying primers give your skin a blurred look that claims to last throughout the day.

Hydrating

If you’ve ever tried to apply foundation on dry skin, you know that it totally ruins your complexion. Using a hydrating primer will give your skin the added moisture it needs to create the perfect foundation for the rest of your makeup. Just like illuminating primers, they can also be worn without other makeup, just to give your skin a natural glow. Many moisturizers can double as good hydrating primers as well.
