Trying Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara So You Don’t Have To
If you’re anything like us at The Edge, you’re a sucker for a good TikTok trend. The most recent product that’s captured our attention is Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara whose hashtag #skyhighmascara has generated almost 150 million views on the app, leading us to believe that there might be some truth to the claim that this mascara could make our lashes touch our brows.
After finally finding the mascara online at Ulta, since it’s been sold out on Amazon for weeks, I was ready to try it. I ordered it in the shade ‘Blackest Black’ in an attempt to conceal my bleach blonde lashes as thoroughly as possible.
First, let’s take a look at what we’re working with. Clearly, my lashes are nothing to brag about. They’re short, they’re blonde, they’re straight, and they’re thin. What a winning combo. That being said, my pain will be your gain, if Maybelline can somehow convince everyone that I was in fact ~born with it~.
Upon first look at the mascara, I had my doubts. The brush is kind of thin and flimsy, which made me wonder if the mascara would sacrifice volume in order to create that “Sky High” look. I’d used a similar brush before with L’Oréal’s Telescopic Mascara, but I always had to pair it with a second mascara in order to get both length and volume. So I crossed my fingers and hoped Maybelline could pull off the impossible.
I began by curling my lashes to combat the aforementioned straight nature of them. Usually, I use a lash primer before going in with mascara, but today I’m going to show you what it looks like without using any other products.
I went in with the first coat and was fairly impressed. The mascara coated my lashes well, but there was definitely some noticeable clumping on my top lashes. However, I will say that is pretty normal for me when it comes to the first coat of any mascara. The first coat also did a great job with my bottom lashes, which have always been somewhat of a struggle-area for me.
I decided to go in with one more coat. I usually do 2-3 coats depending on the mascara, but I felt like two was all I needed. I was able to separate a little bit of that clumpy-ness with the second coat and you can see that a lot more length was added. I tried to direct my lashes outward to create a more open look. I decided to stick with one coat on my bottom lashes to avoid making them look heavy, especially since I already really liked the way they looked with one coat.
Overall, I’m super happy with the look this mascara gave me. Compared to my lashes before, there is definitely a lot more length and some added volume. My lashes managed to stay lifted and separated throughout the entire day, which is rare for me without using a primer or waterproof mascara. I’d say that the Sky High Mascara deserved all the TikTok hype, especially considering it comes in at just under $12. All that’s left is to pop on your favorite mask and you’re ready to take on your day!
