Perth- A Hidden Jewel

Australia seems to be a common destination on everyone’s bucket list, and for good reason. We’ve all dreamed of traveling to the land down under; hoping that one day we would be lucky enough to visit The Gold Coast, Melbourne, or The Great Barrier Reef. This country is home to many popular tourist destinations, and with so many outstanding places to choose from the Western region often gets overlooked.

Perth is the capital city of Western Australia, but because it’s famously known for being “The most isolated city in the world”, tourists don’t usually flock towards it. However, with the ocean on one side and the Australian outback on the other, people have no idea what they’re missing. Here’s a look into Perth and a few of the enjoyable activities they have to offer.

Rottnest Island

Just a short ferry ride from Perth, this idyllic paradise awaits with crystalline water. You can spend the day relaxing on pristine white sand beaches, or take a more proactive approach by choosing to snorkel, kayak, or even skydive! “Rotto,” as the locals call it suits everyone’s getaway needs. We can’t forget about Australia's native animals, the Quokka that inhabit this island. These little squirrel-like creatures are one of the island’s main attractions (I mean, just one look will make your heart melt). They’re always smiling and ready to take a selfie with you! Be prepared to be charmed by these mini marsupials.

Fremantle

This lively port has the feeling of a colonial-era city. Fremantle is full of antique architecture but the art and street performances add a modern flare. This city has something for everyone; from restaurants to shopping to theatrical performances, you’ll never find yourself being bored. And the best part is that the city’s activities don’t stop as the sun goes down. Fremantle offers an appealing, vivacious evening environment. Enjoying wandering around the late-night markets, catching a movie, or going out with some mates at the countless pubs, bars, and clubs.

Margaret River

This quaint town in Perth is known for its wineries, but also has a lot more to offer. Being on the coast of the Indian Ocean and home to some of the world's tallest trees, the Margaret river offers exquisite views that are hard to beat. This town features a vast majority of outdoor activities consisting of rock climbing outdoors, mountain biking or the option to stick to something more simple, like canoeing. And for all the non-adrenaline seekers don’t worry there’s plenty of leisurely entertainment available. Dip in and out and browse the charming boutiques that can be found on every corner while enjoying some of the best wine in the country. Don’t enjoy wine? Get your caffeine fix at one of the many contemporary coffee places around. However you choose to spend your time here, it will be time well spent.

Caversham Wildlife Park

This park surely beats any other zoo you’ve been to. Having the opportunity to actively interact with native Australian wildlife is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Take turns feeding the kangaroos, joeys, and wombats, before moving on to meeting the infamous Koalas. This family-owned zoo is home to all sorts of fluffy animals, and can easily be a full-day activity. Learning about the unique flora and fauna, and engaging with the wildlife is surely something you won’t forget.

Wave Rock

The Wave Rock, also referred to as ‘Katter Kitch’ by the native aboriginal people, is a distinctive rock formation in Western Australia. This unusual rock is shaped like a ginormous wave right as it’s breaking before it crashes into a cloud of white water. This 15-meter land formation is well worth the hike. This rock holds with it a lot of history and gives visitors the chance to learn about the aboriginal people who have been around for over 50,000 years here. A trip to the wave rock is one of the most authentic cultural experiences one could have in Perth.

Just because Perth may not be the most popular destination for travelers to Australia, doesn’t mean it’s any less magnificent. If you ever have the chance to wander around this jewel of a city, make sure you do.
