Over the past two years, CBD-infused products have exploded in popularity, from anti-stress and pain relief supplements, food products, and most notably, skin care products. With trending buzzwords in the cosmetics industry like CBD, it can be hard to tell if it is an over-hyped marketing fad, or if the ingredients are actually as beneficial as advertised. However, CBD-infused products have actually been proven by dermatologists to be beneficial for the skin. CBD has tons of great properties for the skin, including antioxidant properties which control breakouts and other skin conditions like rosacea and eczema, and improve hydration and regulate oil production.

But what actually is CBD? Part of the cannabinoid family, CBD (cannabidiol), is derived from marijuana plants, also known as cannabis sativa. To clear up some of the common misconceptions, CBD does not induce a ‘high’ like other cannabis-derived products, since it does not include the psychoactive compound, THC. CBD is extracted from the flower of the plant, then typically diluted in an oil form to create supplements, food products, and oils ready for cosmetic applications. A con of CBD products is that it isn’t FDA approved, meaning it is important to be sure the product is tested and approved by a third party. A way to be sure of what you are paying for is to check for any certificate of analysis or quality assurance on the product website.

The verdict is that CBD skin care products are a great way to naturally heal troubled skin, as long as you are sure of what kind of testing and approval the product has received.
