Cocktails That Don’t Compromise Your Health
We’ve all heard the term liquid calories. This toxic term invented by diet culture instills the belief that liquid calories are empty calories that provide no nutritional benefits to the consumer. While this does ring true for sugary sodas, and yes, alcohol, the consumption of liquid calories can be a part of a well-balanced diet when consumed in moderation. The best way to combat the cultivation of a ‘beer belly’ or the dreaded sugar-induced bloat and hangover is to healthify your favorite drinks by using organic, low-calorie and low sugar ingredients. We here at The Edge love a good cocktail and have compiled a list of three must-try healthy cocktails for you to create and enjoy!
1. Skinny Marg
This Mexican restaurant staple is a game-changer. With this simple cocktail, you can enjoy going out with your friends and still feel great in the morning. The Skinny Marg is quite literally a margarita with less agave, aka the ingredient that gives a margarita its sweetness. This cocktail is simple to make as it requires just four ingredients: your tequila of choice, lime juice, Topo Chico, and agave. (PS-The Mission serves a fantastic Skinny Marg)
2. Vodka Soda
Stumble into any college bar and you’ll be handed a greasy menu with a list of drink offerings that sound far from healthy. Instead of panicking and ordering a Blue Motorcycle, ask the bartender for a vodka soda. This is a low-calorie cocktail that is easy to order and make. The drink consists of three components: soda water or club soda, vodka, and lime for taste. This drink rings in at just about 85 calories and only 1 gram of sugar!
3. Espresso Martini
This cocktail has influencers in a chokehold right now, and we understand why. It’s delicious and quite photogenic! With coffee and vodka (or tequila, iykyk) this drink packs a punch and is the ultimate date night drink. A version of this classic cocktail that we’re currently obsessed with is a simple, sugar-free recipe that contains just four ingredients: vodka, cold brew concentrate or 1 espresso shot, sugar-free syrup, and coffee beans for garnish. This version is even keto-friendly with zero grams of sugar or carbs and just 131 calories per serving.
