Navigating Spring Cleaning in a Dorm

Whether you are typically a clean person, or are known for making a mess, dorm rooms and college apartments can become a disaster zone in a matter of hours. With months of accumulated food, piles of clothes, boxes and random crap - spring cleaning is a necessity. If you are looking to clean up your space, or do some rearranging, we at The Edge have some tips for you.

Rearrange your room

Spring cleaning means a fresh start, so it might be nice to move around some stuff. Switch up the orientation of your bed or move your desk to a new spot. Print out pictures from the semester so far and hang them on the wall. Even small changes can help freshen up the space and make it more enjoyable.

Get rid of stuff

Get rid of anything you don’t need. Random piles of junk, old notebooks or textbooks or clothes that never get worn. We always say that if you haven’t worn it in the last month or two then you probably won’t wear it again. Getting rid of clothes gives you the opportunity to buy new ones (the excuse we all use). Having less clutter will allow things to stay better organized and help you keep it clean easier.

Actually CLEAN

That vacuum that has been sitting in the closet for the past two months- pull it out. Clean out the fridge and pantry, there's probably lots of stale chip bags and half eaten pizza hidden back there that you have forgotten about. Especially with spring break coming up- get rid of all that stuff! Transitioning to college and having to do your own cleaning can definitely be challenging for some people, so take the opportunity to wipe down countertops and clean the sink! We promise it will be worth it in the end.

Get your life together

Take this opportunity to get anything else done that maybe you've been avoiding or putting off. Updating your resume, applying for internships or even just doing a little self care. With spring right around the corner, warm weather is fast approaching. Take a little time for yourself and do whatever it is that you need to do.

These all seem like super obvious tips, we’re all adults and capable of managing ourselves. But no matter how silly these may seem, they can make a huge difference in productivity and organization in the long run.
