Relieving Stress
It’s that time of the semester where everything you have learned is put to the test. Elon students are scattered across study rooms or holed up in their rooms. Some might even be stepping foot into the library for the first time. Whether it’s for an exam or a project, chances are you are VERY stressed right now. Stress is a normal part of life, and while it may be magnified during exam season, it’s essential to remember that you can and will get through this. There are many healthy ways to cope with finals stress, and we at The Edge believe that these are some of the most beneficial.
Make a schedule.
When you have a set plan to turn to, it makes it more difficult to procrastinate. With a schedule, you can set certain times to work and rest, emphasis on the rest. Sometimes people get so wrapped up in their work that they study for hours without taking the necessary breaks. Breaks are actually productive. They give you the time to step away from your work and you can go back to it in a more focused state.
Curate a study playlist.
Doing this is a fun way to get into the study mindset. You can pick your favorite songs or maybe just ones that help you to focus while you’re working. Creating a playlist allows you to romanticize the work you’re doing. With a soundtrack, you are able to picture yourself as the main character in a movie who is one step away from passing every single final.
Go for a walk.
Getting away from your computer is a MUST. Exercise is also an amazing option, but for those who don’t feel like hitting the gym during finals week, this is a perfect alternative. You get your blood flowing and being outside will provide an instant serotonin boost with Vitamin D.
Prioritize sleep.
A good night of sleep is beneficial for school performance so if you can, skip the all-nighters. A good nap in between studying will provide both a break and a reset. You might think you can just sleep after finals, but trust us when we say you’re going to want to walk into your exam fully rested.
Make time for your friends.
This is your last week of the semester. You don’t have to isolate yourself from everyone in order to succeed. Laughing with your friends is a great way to escape from becoming trapped in your own head. You’re allowed to get dinner with your roommate or watch one episode of your favorite television show with your best friends… so let yourself.
These might seem like obvious tips, but it is easy to fall into the trap of studying for hours and not taking time for self-care. Remember that it’s impossible to be perfect. Sometimes studying for a few hours is enough and over-studying can be counterproductive. It is also important that you remind yourself that one bad grade isn’t indicative of your worth. Grades are not everything so don’t lose sight of that during the late night study sessions or right before an exam. Believe in yourself, and after it’s all over, it’s officially summer.
