Sticking to Your New Year’s Resolutions, For Real This Time

If you’re anything like us here at The Edge, you probably wish you were a little bit better at sticking to your New Year’s resolutions each year. Every year we make a decision to try to better ourselves, but by the end of the year the odds are pretty slim that we actually accomplished the goal we set for ourselves 12 months ago. We wanted to come up with some tips for all of us to actually accomplish our goals this year.

Make a smaller, more attainable goal

It might seem obvious to make a goal that’s actually attainable, but a lot of times our New Year’s resolutions sound more broad. For instance, we want to eat healthier, get to a healthier weight or clear up our skin. While these can all be pretty normal goals, it’s difficult to actually make yourself stick to them when the results might not come for a while.

If you take your broad New Year’s resolution and turn it into multiple smaller goals, you’ll be way more likely to actually achieve your end goal. Say your New Year’s resolution is to totally clear up your skin. To achieve this you might make one of your smaller goals be to wash your face every morning and night. Once this is a consistent part of your routine, you could add exfoliating twice a week. Of course these smaller goals are going to be different for everyone, but we think it’s a great way to make your resolution seem more realistic.

Have someone to keep you accountable

Although some resolutions might be more personal than others, if you’re comfortable with your friends knowing your goals for the year it’s a great way to keep yourself accountable. By sharing your goals with your friends and having them share their goals with you, you can check-in with each other and make sure that you’re both on the right track. You’ll want to share your goals with someone who you can trust to be both firm in keeping you accountable and understanding when sometimes you might just want a break. Having an accountability partner is a great way to ensure you’ll stick to your goals all year.

Make a checklist

Our last tip might be the most simple one, but we think it’s the most important. Making a checklist of what you want to accomplish each day, week, or month will help you visualize how you can achieve your resolution. Writing out what goals you have will make them feel more real and can make you more likely to actually accomplish them, so that you can check them off.

We hope this small list of tips to help you actually stick to your New Year’s resolutions will inspire you to accomplish your goals this year. By making smaller goals, having an accountability partner, and writing out your goals, we think you’ll be set to accomplish everything you hope to!
