Five Creative, Makeup-Based Halloween Costumes

With Halloween approaching, it’s time to start thinking about costumes. October 31, and the surrounding “Halloweekend,” is the one time a year to let loose and let your creative side show completely. There are no limits to how creative your costume can be. Whether you want something pretty and simple, or you want to be scary and gory, makeup is a great way to take your costume to the next level.

You don’t have to be a professional makeup artist to complete these looks. While some of these looks may require more time than others, the general concept of each can range from beginner to expert. Without further ado, here are our top five picks for makeup-based Halloween costumes!

Clown

A clown is a classic Halloween costume, but you don’t need to pull out a red nose and curly rainbow wig. Using a bit of eyeshadow and lipstick, you can easily create a fun clown look. This costume is awesome because you can approach it any way you want. Anything goes, whether you want a cute circus clown or a creepy clown. You can pair the creepy clown makeup with a white dress and a red balloon and be Pennywise the Clown from the movie “It.” Or, wear a colorful outfit and be a friendly clown. The possibilities are endless.

Mermaid or Siren

If you want a simple yet beautiful look, consider being a mermaid. If you’re stuck between being something pretty or something scary, a siren is a hauntingly beautiful costume. The fish-scale look may seem complicated, but it’s super easy to recreate using a pair of fishnet tights. Simply put the fishnet over your face and dab some eyeshadow or face paint over it. When you (carefully!) remove the fishnet, you’ll see a scale-like pattern left behind. You can also spruce up this look with glitter and face gems.

Medusa

This is a costume that’s sure to make everyone green with envy. In Greek mythology, Medusa is a woman cursed with snakes for hair who can turn people into stone if they look into her eyes. This look can be fun to create because you can be super creative with the snake motif. If you want to go all out, get some snake-like contacts and incorporate snakes into your hair. Or, keep it simple with a green mini-dress and some snake-inspired makeup.

Queen of Hearts

We LOVE this idea. The Queen of Hearts is a stylish villain from the classic tale “Alice in Wonderland.” With so many retellings of this story, there are multiple ways to portray this character. Whether you interpret the look from the live-action movie or simply dress as a queen with heart details, this costume is a guaranteed hit. Use some fake blood and regular old playing cards for a creepier twist.

Flower

If you want something sweet, be a flower. With a floral dress, any of these flower makeup looks are a hit. This is a great look because you can simply doodle a few flowers on your face or transform your entire face into a garden. You can find fake flowers at any craft store and attach them to your face with a skin-safe adhesive. This can also be a cute duo costume if your friend or partner wants to be a gardener.
