Coffee in Copenhagen

The coffee culture in Copenhagen, Denmark is unmatched. Quality coffee and specialty drinks can be found in the coziest cafes along with the most delicious pastries. Unlike many European cities such as Italy, where espresso is typically served without flavors or milk, fans of iced vanilla lattes and dirty chais can find their drink of choice in plenty of the countless coffee spots in Copenhagen. During my semester studying abroad in Copenhagen, I took it upon myself to find the best coffee in the city while discovering study spots and exploring with friends. My drink of choice? A vanilla latte with oat milk. Here are some of my favorite places that I found along the way!

Emmylou Cafe

Small and tucked away on a side street in the inner city, this cafe gives off the most hygge vibes you could ask for. Warm lights, dried flowers, checkered floors and soft music only begin to describe the coziness of this cafe. Not to mention, their coffee is the highest quality you could ask for. Their vanilla lattes are the perfect amount of sweetness and are topped with the most delicious foam. A plus? The smell of freshly baked croissants always fills the air of this coffee shop. If you ever find yourself visiting Copenhagen, I highly recommend trying Emmylou Cafe. The calm environment also makes it a great study spot if you plan to study abroad in Denmark!

Emmerys

With one location close to my classes and many spread across the city, Emmerys — an organic bakery with coffee — was a staple of mine. Their lattes are sweet and delicious, but their pastries are even better. Here, you can try all of the traditional Danish pastries, breads and cakes, made organic and fresh every morning. I highly suggest the cinnamon rolls and poppy seed buns! The best part? They offer student discounts and coffee cards to help you save money!

Democratic Coffee

This spot in the inner city always seems to be packed with Copenhageners, either parents and kids on their daily stroll or students working away. Connected to the Copenhagen Main Library, Democratic Coffee is a great choice for students in need of a quiet atmosphere and a good cup of coffee. Sit by the big windows and watch locals ride all sorts of bikes through the streets. Their lattes may be my favorite in the city because of their well-balanced taste and sweet foam!

Coffee Industry Sweden

Another staple for students in Copenhagen, with its student discount and plenty of table space for working, is Coffee Industry Sweden. I recommend their chai lattes and vanilla lattes, as well as their seasonal drinks!

Buzz Kaffebar

Perhaps one of the most aesthetic and cozy places to grab coffee in Copenhagen is Buzz Kaffebar. When you walk in, you are greeted by hanging lights, plants everywhere and each wood table lit with a candle. This cafe’s coffee is strong and sweet, and it offers an amazing brunch menu that includes classic Danish brunch plates, delicious waffles, sandwiches, salads and more. This spot makes a great place to gather your friends for breakfast or lunch, but it also makes a super cozy study spot.

Espresso House

Espresso House is essentially the Starbucks of Scandinavia. You can find one in every part of Copenhagen and should expect it to be quite pricey. However, they do offer any specialty coffee drink you could imagine in a big mug, as well as very cozy seating. Whether you are craving an iced caramel macchiato or a seasonal drink, Espresso House is probably your safest bet on where to find one.

While these are only a handful of my favorite spots to enjoy a coffee in Copenhagen, there are hundreds of places to discover in this coffee loving city!
