Patagonia
Everyone has a bucket list destination — somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit if only you had the time, unlimited funds or the right people to go with. Whether it be to backpack around Europe, ski in the Swiss Alps or relax on a luxurious tropical vacation, everyone has a place they dream of traveling. If Patagonia isn’t already on your bucket list, it needs to be.
When most people think of ‘Patagonia’, they think of the brand. The brand name itself originated from a climbing trip to Monte Fitz Roy, a mountain range located in the southern Patagonian Ice Fields on the border between Chile and Argentina. Yvon Chouinard, the founder of the Patagonia brand, was so inspired and in awe of the national park that he decided to create an entire company because of it, which is now one of the most sustainable sports and outdoor clothing brands to exist.
A trip to Patagonia is perfect for anyone with a deep appreciation for nature, wildlife and adventure. Patagonia itself is made up of nine national parks, containing the majority of the Andes mountain range and spanning over a million square kilometers in both Argentina and Chile. It is unlike any national park in the United States because it is truly untouched wilderness.
Now, the real question: what is there to do in Patagonia? Hike.
Hiking is, without a doubt, the main attraction. You can do all sorts of hiking, whether it be a 10-mile hike to the base of the towers, a 15-mile hike through the French valley or even a 4-mile hike through the grassy plains, scanning for wildlife. No matter what you choose, you’re going to have the most incredible views and see some wildlife — most likely guanacos.
Guanacos, which are basically a wild version of the llama or alpaca, dominate the plains of Patagonia. Their primary predator, rarely seen by tourists but considered “a gift from nature” if you are lucky enough, is the puma. On top of these fascinating animals, there are flamingos, condors and other species of birds you won’t get the chance to see elsewhere.
You don’t need to be an experienced hiker to make the most out of Patagonia. Even staying within the comfort of your hotel, you will experience amazing views and possibly the sighting of wildlife. There are boat rides to the Perito Moreno Glacier, fishing, relaxing in lagoons, horseback riding, biking and more!
There is so much to do and see in Patagonia, and you can’t possibly do it all in one trip. It provides the perfect adventurous vacation for people of all ages and expertise. There are amazing photography opportunities everywhere you look. If you want to learn more about Patagonia, or get a sneak peak into the mesmerizing wildlife and landscape, watch episode two “Chilean Patagonia” of Our Great National Parks, a Netflix docuseries. It will undoubtedly intrigue the nature lover and inspire you to add Patagonia to your bucket list ASAP!
