Your Guide to Summer in Copenhagen

As the temperatures are rising and flowers of every color are blooming, students at Elon are getting a taste of summer as the end of the semester approaches. Unfortunately, we have yet to be finished with our busy workloads and chosen commitments here on campus to enjoy the fabulous weather. Here at The Edge, we sit here daydreaming of days at the beach and summer travel in between writing our papers and working on our projects. If you are experiencing a case of wanderlust and are planning a trip abroad this summer like us, we highly recommend that you add Copenhagen, Denmark to your list. A summer day in this magical city will sweep you off your feet for endless activities outside and unique city experience. Below, we share our favorites for this city during the summertime.

RELAX BY THE WATER

One of the most unique parts of Copenhagen is its location on the water. This Nordic city sits on the Øresund Sound, which is connected to the Baltic Sea, and is known for its clean canals that weave throughout the city. A bright, sunny day is well spent by the water in Copenhagen. You can simply take a stroll or bike along the canals to see the famous, colorful houses in Nyhavn and other equally beautiful parts of the city, such as the neighborhood of Christianshavn, the Black Diamond Library and Christiansborg Palace. A popular activity among locals and tourists in the warm months is swimming in the canals at one of the harbor baths; some even feature towers that you can jump into the water from. We also highly recommend renting a GoBoat, a small boat with a picnic table in its center that you can sail through the canals.

TAKE A BEACH DAY

If you are looking for a break from the city and the beach is calling your name, all it takes is a quick trip on the metro and a short walk to get to Copenhagen’s lovely beaches. Don’t miss out on a swim at the Kastrup Sea Bath, which is designed in the shape of a snail for warmth and protection against the wind. Find a spot to tan on the wooden docks and jump into the sea! You can also relax on the sandy beach. Another popular spot to lay by the beach is Amager Strand, where you can watch sailboats go by and see the wind turbines standing in the sea. Both of these spots are perfect for a relaxing beach day during your visit to Copenhagen.

SUNSET SPOTS

One great place to catch the sunset reflecting on the water are The Lakes, which are large man-made lakes in the middle of the city. You can take a walk along the pathways surrounding them and then find a bench to sit on, or you can bring a blanket to sit on the grass. Watching the swans floating by makes this experience even more magical.

Another truly unique place in Copenhagen that is only open in the warm months is Reffen, an outdoor venue on the water with street foods from all over the world. While enjoying delicious food and drinks, you can find a seat near a fire pit and watch the sun go down over the water. There are countless places to watch the sunset in Copenhagen, but we highly recommend these two popular spots on a summer night.

There are endless activities and places to see in Copenhagen, so this is just a handful of ideas for how to spend a summer day in the city. Summer is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Copenhagen. The days are long and light, the weather is warm and everything is green. The Danish capital makes for the perfect summer destination, whether you are looking to visit a vibrant city or spend time in nature and by the water. There is something for everyone here!
