Five Underrated TV Shows to Add to Your Watch List

It’s all too often we open our television apps and run into the same issue: What should I watch? It’s all too often that you finish a Netflix series and find yourself asking yourself, What should I watch now? In this article, we provide you with three underrated shows that are worth your next watch. They’re hilarious, witty and, most importantly, all feature some badass female leads.

Broad City

“Broad City,” which aired on Comedy Central from 2014–2019, is a hilarious, women-centric, contemporary sitcom series. It follows the lives of two best friends, Ilana Wexler and Abby Abrams, as they navigate their way through their 20’s in New York City. The show is based on the real life friendship of main characters Ilana and Abby, who make the smallest and most mundane events hysterical to watch. They write with a comical and satirical tone that is current and reflective of their points of view. Their adventures always seem to lead them down bizarre and spontaneous paths, whether that’s the air vent of a music venue as they try to sneak themselves into a Wiz Khalifa concert, or finding themselves on a birthright trip to Israel where they go through extreme lengths to sit next to one another. It features a harrowingly accurate representation of millennials in NYC and painfully relatable comedy of turning basic events — like getting locked out of your apartment or traveling to the airport — into a 300-minute melodrama. The series amassed a devoted cult following and basically became a top-tier contemporary sitcom throughout its run.

Gracie and Frankie

“Grace and Frankie” is a popular American television series revolving around the lives of Grace Hanson (played by Jane Fonda) and Frankie Bergstein (played by Lily Tomlin). The iconic duo are brought together after their husbands reveal that they are gay and in love with each other. The series follows the two women as they navigate their newfound independence and redefine their lives in their golden years, including dealing with their ex-husbands, adult children and personal struggles. It displays close female friendships and an honest exploration of topics like love, loss and aging all with a witty undertone. The duo are unapologetically themselves and take a refreshing approach to the topic of aging by proving that it is just another number.

Good Girls

“Good Girls” is an American crime-comedy drama television series that follows the story of three suburban mothers — Beth, Ruby, and Annie — who are struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families. They decide to rob a local supermarket. However, things quickly go south when they discover that the money they stole belongs to a dangerous criminal organization. The trio descends down a series of gang heists, secrets and family crises. “Good Girls” keeps you on your toes and is an unexpected binge-watch. Every episode leaves you on a cliff-hanger wanting more.

The Mindy Project

You may know her from projects like Ocean’s 8 or The Office, which she served as a writer and executive producer of. Actress and writer Mindy Kailing brings fans into another version of her creative psyche in the light and quirky quirky rom-com show, The Mindy Project. In The Mindy Project, Kailing takes full creative reign producing niche scenes and skits reflective of her life experiences. The series centers around Mindy Lahiri, an OB-GYN, as she tries to balance her personal relationships with professional life. Set in New York City primarily within Kaling's OB-GYN practice, The Mindy Project has an Office feel with feminist undertones.

Insecure

It’s brilliant. It’s awkward. It’s relatable. Issa Rae’s Insecure is a lens into the black female experience in contemporary times. The series follows main character Issa Dee (played by Issa Rae) who struggles to navigate her personal and professional life while dealing with issues related to gender, race and relationships. Like Broad City, Rae has a way of making even the most mundane of activities interesting, and there’s a relatable undertone that captures your attention. As Rotten Tomatoes perfectly puts it, Rae “cuts through stereotypes with sharp wit and an effusive spirit.”

Happy watching!
