The Artist of the Moment: Peso Pluma
If you haven’t been living under a rock, then you have probably heard of Peso Pluma or have heard a song of his playing. Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija also famously known as Peso Pluma or la Doble P, is a Mexican-born singer who is currently trending and topping the charts. Many people like to claim that Peso Pluma is the next Bad Bunny, but let’s not say that — both artists are really talented, and they both deserve their own recognition.
Peso Pluma has done a lot for the Mexican community. For many years, Mexican music has been seen as a “pasia” or cringe. So, it’s nice to see for a change that Mexican artists are getting more recognition worldwide and at the speed Peso Pluma has.
Many have famously claimed that he is the future of the regional music genre in Mexico. His music is different from what has always been popular in Mexico. Peso Pluma is part of the new wave of the regional Mexican genre. He is part of the artists who combine other aspects of genres such as hip-hop and reggaeton with regional Mexican music. This is also a large factor in his quick popularity.
The duet with the group Eslabon Armado on the song Ella Baila Sola, became the first Mexican Song to enter the Billboard 100 peaking in the top five. It reached more than 24 million streams. It also peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Global 200. He even surpassed Bad Bunny, taking the number-one spot on Spotify in Mexico. Without a doubt, Peso Pluma has quickly risen to the top of the charts and has taken the world by storm.
On Spotify, he currently ranks as one of the world's top five most streamed artists. Five of the collaborations that he has been a part of have reached the top 50 on the global Billboard charts. He was even on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon — the first regional Mexican artist to be a guest on Fallon’s show.
Peso Pluma has collaborated with artists such as Becky G, Eslabon Armado, Yng Lvcas, Natanael Cano, and Marshmello. Some of his most popular songs include La Bebe, AMG, PNC, and Ella Baila Sola.
The newfound stardom of Peso Pluma has demonstrated that Mexico can also reach the top and have other music genres than just the stereotypical regional Mexican genre. He is one of the artists of the moment.
