The Blend Between Want and Need

I think we all know about the notorious debate between what we as humans want and what we genuinely need. And when you really boil it down, what we truly need to survive consists of a few things including money, shelter, food and water. But in reality, especially in this generation, our understanding of what we need has significantly expanded and changed mostly due to social media.

Social media has highlighted a new idea of underconsumption vs. overconsumption. From luxurious goods to multiple cars to one pair of sneakers and the same water bottle since 2018, this idea has brought back the debate versus what we want and what we need. While this definition can look different for people, there are a few things we can agree on in this debate:

  • The fundamental understanding of wanting something is that it comes from a personal gain standpoint and is not necessary to add to our lives. It’s also the yearning for something we do not currently have.

  • In contrast, needing something is usually something that is necessary for survival or to go about our daily lives. When we need something, it is out of necessity and not personal reasoning.

These two concepts can blend and thanks to social media, the blend gets worse and worse. We want to keep up with the trends, have the newest version of things and expand our lives to match those we see online. I know I’m guilty of seeing a cute top online and saying “Oh my gosh I NEED that top” when in reality, I have no more room in my closet to do so.

Reframing our minds to what we need to live our daily lives and what we want is hard. By actively reminding ourselves that there is a difference between them, we can also differentiate what is truly important to us and what isn’t.

Our values, opinions, freedom, relationships, health, etc., are at the top of the list of what we need. Needing love, understanding, appreciation, and so many other things is more fulfilling and long-term than materialistic goods that give you a temporary high. While it is fun to buy new things every once in a while, being mindful of what we truly need can go a long way.

Rethinking this concept is a somewhat simple but rewarding exercise that can be fulfilling in a multitude of ways. Simply catching yourself saying you “need” something, when it’s something you want, allows you to take a step back and rethink what you actually need. By doing this, you are taking a moment to be grateful for what you have, and by recognizing that, you feel more content overall.

I like a full closet just as much as the next girl but understanding the difference between a want and a need just helps remind you what’s really important in your life. They can both coexist but a little reminder never hurt anyone :)
