Tips for the 'Big Move' Abroad: Europe Edition

When it comes to moving abroad as an American, there are a lot of questions asked. How soon should I apply for a visa? How much should I bring? The list is endless. You may even have questions about every single step of the move to ensure that the transition from America to your new intended destination is as seamless as possible…That’s totally normal! Of course, there is only so much you can find online about making the big move and the information can be few and far between. We decided to accumulate all that information into one place as a helpful tool if you decide to move abroad and included some of our own tips for making this exciting, next step.

Finances

Finances are an immensely important part of moving abroad to a new country. Of course, some of the financial elements that are needed can’t be completed until you get there, but there are some things you can do to take some of the financial load off even before stepping off U.S. soil. One way to get ahead when getting financials in order is setting up accounts at a bank where you are moving to. For example, if you were moving to Switzerland, you could open up an account with UBS bank. With the opening of a bank account or two, it will allow you to also gain access to local bank cards which will help you when trying to buy items for your new home.

In terms of having currency when moving, ensure you have a decent amount of cash with you where you are moving to. Some countries require you to carry a certain amount when entering the country. Also, Europe is more cash reliant for things such as dining, cab rides or shopping. With this being said, definitely get your currency before entering into the country. You can either do this at the airport, which will cost you a bit more with transaction fees, or you can find a bank that will help convert the money.

One other financial point to be aware of is what the tax situation will be when moving to your new country. If you are an American citizen, no matter where you move to, you will have to pay taxes to the government. There are some countries like the U.K., that have agreements with the U.S. to lift some of the tax burden off you, but definitely look into what the taxation requirements are for both the U.S. and your new country.

Personal Belongings

It may be the BIG MOVE, but logistically, it might be a little tricky to bring everything across the pond.  If you want to leave some of your personal items in the U.S., make sure to either find a well priced long term storage or keep it with someone who has the space. For those who are wanting to ship some furniture over, make sure to research which international moving company you will use. Also, if you do use a shipping company for furniture, be aware it can take weeks to get all of your furniture and items to your new place. This means that any items you need, such as clothes, personal mementos or important documents, need to be with you in your luggage that you take with you. We also recommend bringing some photos and some small room decorations to help you add some of your charm to your place when you first get there.

Packing

Now packing up your whole life can be overwhelming, but a good tip would be to organize everything in a list from what you need readily to what can be packed up. In addition, when packing, definitely keep track of what is in which box. You can do this on a spreadsheet or a document. Two major items we would recommend you pack with you in your suitcase are plug adapters and surge protectors. If you bring anything with a U.S. plug, you need to have an adapter. Anything that is a big appliance that you bring, such as a TV or an XBox, needs to have a surge protector or else your house's power will blow.

Other important things:

  • Sort out your mailing address

  • Get your mobile phone first thing when you land

  • Ensure your visa application is sent in a timely manner

  • Learn some of the language before moving
