Gen- Z’s Feminist Icons

Today's feminist icons are redefining the women's rights movement for our generation. Music artists and TikTok creators hold unconventional but impactful roles in modern-day feminism.

We at The Edge want to share some of our favorite Gen-Z feminists icons and why their non-traditional activism is so significant. While some of these role models may not be part of Gen-Z, they each use their platforms to reach and inspire young women in the generation.

Taylor Swift comes to mind as a modern day feminist trailblazer. While her music may have drawn us in, we stayed for her informed and outspoken opinions on women's rights. Her influence is just as multigenerational and global as her fanbase. Swift uses her influence to advocate for equal pay, feminine healthcare and female representation in the music industry.

This is Taylor's Version of feminism.

Meghan Thee Stallion is unapologetically bold, and her unwillingness to conform to traditional ideas of femininity makes her message more powerful. She continually advocates for body and sex positivity while challenging gender roles in her empowering songs. She says it herself in one of her most famous lines, “I don’t cook, I dont clean, but let me tell you I got this ring.” She also works to achieve female representation and pushes for the intersectionality of feminism and racial justice for black women.

Dylan Mulvaney has a different platform for her message: TikTok. The transgender influencer is extremely open about her transition and advocates for all women's rights specifically, acknowledging that transgender women are women. Mulvaney became infamous after she was featured as the face of a Bud Light promotion. She tackled the campaign’s controversy with pride, by creating a teachable moment about the under representation of transgender women in the media.

Though Greta Thunberg is primarily focused on environmental activism, she is absolutely a Gen-Z feminist icon. At the age of 15 she became an influential advocate for climate change. Her voice is so impactful that she was invited to speak at the United Nations, inspiring countless young women to use their voice for change.

Each of these women are feminist icons for Gen-Z because they use their platforms to speak on pertinent issues. The gender pay gap, access to healthcare and underrepresentation of intersectionality are all things that young women today are forced to face. We hope that some of these women can help inspire you to lend your voice to the feminist movement!
