SCANDAL

Every week I look forward to Shonda-Thursdays. For those of you who are not familiar with the beloved Thursday tradition on ABC, Shonda Rhimes is the creator of Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and Grey’s Anatomy, all of which air on Thursday nights. If you have never seen it, here is what you need to know:

  • Scandal is a political drama

  • The main character of Scandal is Olivia Pope who essentially runs Washington D.C.

  • No matter what national crisis or juicy scandal Pope is dealing with, she always looks impeccable in her sharp work attire

As far as style goes, Pope often struts around town in tailored pant suits, elegant capes and even cozy (but never slouchy) cardigans after a long day with the President. Sometimes it can be difficult to pull together a business casual look while still maintaining one’s style. Everytime I tune in to another Shonda-Thursday, Olivia Pope reminds me that I can still be chic at the office (or the White House).

SO COSMO

One of my newer obsessions, So Cosmo on E!, is perfect for anyone aspiring to work for a magazine or is simply fascinated by the glamorous life of a magazine editor. I’m sure being fabulous is some sort of requirement to work at Cosmopolitan magazine but nonetheless, the employees are always dressed beautifully, in the latest trends and best designers. I love the show for a number of reasons including:

  • It gives its viewers an inside look into the life of an employee at the magazine

  • Viewers get a behind the scenes look at fashion shows, private parties, photoshoots and new makeup and fashion trends

  • It exposes how much of an impact not only Cosmo magazine has but the media as a whole has on consumers and the fashion industry alone. If Cosmo says propeller hats are back in, you’ll definitely see a few in the morning at Starbucks.

  • It has made me recognize the influence of these companies exists in our lives everyday in what we where, eat and do whether we realize it or not.

REIGN

One of my favorite shows that I have been watching now since season one on the CW is called Reign. It is slightly under the radar and definitely a hidden gem on Netflix if you need a new show. Reign takes place in Europe in the 1500s and focuses on the French court. There are scandals, political drama (starting to see I have a type) and plenty of interesting characters. One of the best parts of the show is the costumes. Here are some some cool aspects of the show’s style strategy:

  • The show’s stylist does a fantastic job of merging modern day trends with clothing from the time period

  • As the show progresses, each character’s style began to develop and complimented their own personality

  • The gowns featured reflect their character’s style and are often a new take on common trends from that era (Many of the gowns featured on the show would have definitely been too racy for the 1500s)

From a Fashionista interview, costume designer for the show, Meredith Markwork-Pollack said, “I think it will be quite obvious to our viewers that we're not out to replicate historical costumes. We've created our own distinct look and I think viewers will respond to it positively. I'm hoping it's an inspiration for our female viewers to creatively add to their wardrobe.” She also revealed that she has looked for dresses on Net-A-Porter.

YOUNG & HUNGRY

Young & Hungry has become a guilty pleasure show of mine that I can aimlessly watch while not doing my homework. Beloved Disney actress Emily Osment (cue nostalgic feels) plays the main character, Gabi Diamond, who is a food blogger and private chef to a young millionaire in San Francisco. As an avid viewer, here are some interesting things I have picked up on throughout the seasons:

  • Gabi and her roomie/best friend Sophia seem to have an endless supply of adorable, fun outfits for a financially distressed pair

  • They both have their own styles and are extremely relatable not only in their personalities but also in their looks

  • Gabi is always in a bright outfit that compliments her bubbly attitude on the show

  • Sophia is generally the more responsible of the two and always looks tailored and put together while still maintaining that bright, youthful look

  • Gabi’s look is very easy to recreate especially for budget friendly college students. Many pieces similar to the one’s one screen can be found at places like Lulus, Forever 21, Delia’s or Charlotte Russe

GOSSIP GIRL

The incredible style of the Gossip Girl cast is probably one of the top reasons to watch this show. Cross incredible designers, fun 2000s fashion, Blake Lively, and attractive male leads in suits and you get a dazzling combination.

  • Blaire is more "preppy" and dresses much more classic. Think incredible Manolos and lots of lace and delicate details.
  • Serena has more of an effortlessly sexy tomboy style. Serena's top two trends are over-the-knee boots and plunging necklines. And in the early seasons, a tie - but we won't talk about that.
