Promoting Mental Wellbeing On-Campus
Located in the Koury Center to the right of the fitness center check-in desk, is the new Mind-Body Connection space. With a focus on the connection between mental and physical health, this space is a unique creation on Elon's campus.
The services offered include aromatherapy and wellness resources that focus on health services, self-care, stress-relief, and mindfulness. It is part of Campus Recreation & Wellness and is dedicated to promoting holistic wellness and the importance of mental wellbeing.
The space is a student-centered team effort and is overseen by the student wellness team, led by associate director of student wellness, Charlotte Williams.
"I want to encourage anyone curious or wanting to learn more to stop by or even come in before or after your workout or fitness class," Williams says.
They are always open on a walk-in, self-guided basis and starting in October 2019, student wellness assistants will be available Mondays from 9-11 am, and Wednesdays from 1-3 pm. Services are available for faculty and staff as well as students.
The space supports Elon University's vision of "an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit." It is a product of several Elon staff members' passions for the wellness of Elon students.
"Elon's medical director, Dr. Ginette Archinal, our director of counseling services, Marie Shaw, along with Callie Kelly, coordinator for wellness programs, all saw the need for an innovative opportunity to support existing mental and physical health services at Elon," Williams says. "The Mind-Body Connection space was birthed out of that passion for student wellness."
Williams foresees students using the space as a tool to learn about wellness-related events on campus and discover wellbeing resources available in the Elon community.
"What I most enjoy though, is that I can stop in, grab resources, rest for a moment or just be still," Williams says. "I like that you're not required to do anything but have a rest break from your schedule and day."
The space is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical care, advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Student wellness assistants are working to engage students, faculty, and staff and promote the message of a mentally healthy Elon community.
Be sure to stop by and pick up a complimentary aromatherapy spray bottle and other blends!
