We Tried a Famous Clay Mask, and We Loved It
The Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask is a cult skincare product that promises to exhume all the sebum and dirt from your pores. It is made with 100 percent natural calcium bentonite clay, and it claims that you will feel your face "pulsate" as it draws out all of the impurities. If you Google it, you'll find hundreds of reviews —it's that famous.
To see if this magical face mask could really grant us ~flawless~ skin, I tried it out once a week for an entire month. Every Sunday for the past four weeks, I have applied a thin layer of clay onto my entire face. Some beauty gurus recommend combining the powder with apple cider vinegar, but this created lots of irritation on my skin. I have relatively dry skin, and would recommend mixing the powder with water if your skin also tends to be on the drier side.
Reviews on Amazon do say the product might cause irritation, but the packaging does warn that skin may be red for about 30 minutes afterward, but it should go away. It may be a good idea to try it on a small area of your skin first to check for signs of irritation. My skin was only red for about 20 minutes after each mask.
Below are the notes I took after each mask:
Week One: I didn’t feel my face pulsate, but the mask definitely got rid of some of my blackheads. My face was extremely dry after, so I would recommend moisturizing as soon as you wash the mask off!
Week Two: I used water this time instead of apple cider vinegar. I had a much better experience! My face was tingling but it wasn’t overpowering like last week’s mask. Because of my sensitive skin, I wash my face with water and a drop of soap every night. This mask definitely helps get out the toxins and dirt I miss when washing my face normally.
Week Three: My skin is so SMOOTH!!! I love this mask! To be honest, I was hesitant at first, but the key is to do the mask only once a week. The calcium in the clay is extremely powerful and dries up your skin. You must moisturize after! I also recommend adding a lavender serum to the mask. Lavender not only smells great, but helps with irritation.
Week Four: This was my final week trying the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask, but I will definitely continue to use it. Overall, the texture of my skin has changed; my pores are much smaller, and my skin has a glow to it. The reviews on Amazon were right— this mask rocks!
While this mask might have done the trick for my skin, not every “it” skincare product is perfect for your skin type. We highly recommend doing research before using new skin care products. If you are prone to breakouts or have irritated skin, talk to a dermatologist before using a new product.
