Artist Spotlight: DJ Don Kon

Alex Magan, or as he goes by on stage, Don Kon, is an Elon freshman from Massachusetts who has a passion for Djing and producing music.

At the age of 14 he knew that this is what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. When it came to picking a school, he knew Elon was the place for him when he realized that he could be a music major while also having time for sports; in this case baseball.

At the beginning, Magan just went by his full name while performing, but as time went on and he was, he needed something a little catchier and a logo people would recognize. All his life his aunt always called him “monkey”, and one day he was playing Super Mario Cart with his friends as the character, Donkey Kong, and the idea of Don Kon popped into his head, and that is who he has been ever since. 

Magan’s love for music began at a very young age. 

“My mom introduced me to classical music when I was young and I absolutely loved it,” Magan said.  “While my dad introduced me to disco, jazz, and rock, but I picked up djing and fell in love with it”. Since then, that is what he has been doing. 

Magan is very grateful for his parent’s support because a lot of people who want to go into music are not supported by their family.

When asking him what he loves about the music program here at Elon, Magan says that he can tell they really care about what the students are doing, and that they support the artists in every way they can.

Magan recently got accepted to be an artist for Limelight Records, Elon’s promotional group for up-and-coming student musicians. This is a big move for his art, because they give him all the resources he may need to be successful in this industry. They supply photographers, management, exposure, and much more to the students who are selected for this position. 

When we asked Magan what he sees himself doing in the future, he says he is open to everything, and wants to learn and experience everything he can in his four years here. 

We cannot wait to see where this road takes him!
