Prep School Uniform Meets Street Style
This fall, trends such as sweater vests, cardigans, blazers, collared shirts and tennis skirts are flooding the market. As the temperature starts to drop, layering collared shirts under crewnecks and throwing vests over long sleeves are perfect ways to transition into the colder months.
Styles like this have been introduced at Princess Polly, Zara, Revolve and Brandy Melville just to name a few. The trend seems to be narrowing its focus on a younger demographic, with cropped cardigans, oversized man-tailored shirts and sweater vests to fit a modern age group.
This preppy, Upper East Side inspired trend is one that I hope to see transfer into the winter months. In the photos taken from Pinterest below, girls are wearing shoulder bags with uniform-esque skirts, paired with collars, blazers and cardigans. The headband adds a bolder, preppier element while pairing these looks with a slicked-back low bun and square frame sunglasses offers a chic, minimalistic flare.
To style this trend with pieces in your closet, look for earth or jewel tones. This season green and purple are hot, but also nude and navy fit this aesthetic perfectly. Look for a-line or pleated skirts, crewneck sweatshirts, collared shirts and any cardigan.
I styled two looks above, one with a collared shirt tucked in an a-line skirt, and the other with a hoodie underneath a black blazer, paired with a Burberry inspired skort and shoulder bag. Even if you feel like your pieces are out of date, the way you style them is what matters. Here are a few pieces of inspiration for you to follow the prep school trend this Fall.
