Holidate: The Feel Good Christmas Movie You MUST Watch this Holiday Season
First of all, is there a role Emma Roberts can’t play? Didn’t think so. But let’s be real. We all love those cliche romatic Christmas movies. You know which ones we’re talking about… Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Some type of angst or conflict occurs. Boy performs some romantic swoon-worthy gesture to win her back. Boy and girl share a passionate kiss illuminated under Christmas lights. The end. But let’s be even more real. Although they’re totally a guilty pleasure, we all get a little sick of the unrealistic expectations those picturesque movies set.
Enter Holidate: the perfect blend of the romance of Love Actually but with a crass, Grown Ups-like plot line. The opening scene sets the tone of the whole movie with crude humor and foul language, and it’s really everything you didn’t know you needed in a holiday film.
Without giving away any spoilers, the movie follows two singles, Sloane (Emma Roberts) and Jackson (Luke Bracey), who consistently struggle to find a date for any occasion classifying as a holiday. Sloane, fed-up with her mother’s patronizing response to her daughter showing up to every event without a date, and Jackson, a single on the market for some New Year’s Eve company, bump into each other at the mall and make a pact to be each other’s “holidate.” Every. Single. Holiday.
Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Easter, even Mother’s Day, the two will spend together with little to no contact in between. It’s expected that will be at each other’s holiday parties, no questions asked.
Obviously there’s some twists, turns, and turmoil (and maybe even an amputated finger somewhere in between), but you’ll have to watch it for yourself to find out how Sloane and Jackson’s arrangement works out (or doesn’t… no spoilers here).
Disclaimer: don’t expect this movie to change your life, because it honestly won’t. But if you’re looking for a non-conventional holiday movie that’ll lift your spirits during this totally non-conventional holiday season, grab some popcorn and hot chocolate and look no further than this Netflix original, because we could all use some love and comedic relief this winter.
