Behind the Looks: Quentin Wilson

Across Elon’s pristine campus, variations of the same outfits adorned by twenty somethings can be seen on repeat. Girls in white chunky sneakers paired with jeans and a crop top or leggings and a sweatshirt. With boys the choices appear to be majority like latter, sweatshirts paired with khaki shorts are certainly a staple. However when you look more closely in the crowd, certain students boast outfits with a special flair and edge to them. Quentin Wilson, better known as Q, is the epitome of one of these extraordinary fashion connoisseurs. Q sports jackets, pants and t-shirts with a superior essence to them, nevermind the unique accessories. We decided to dig for a bit of insight into Q’s individual style.

How would you describe your personal style?

I describe my style as Bold, Relaxed, Outspoken, and Free. I look at my style like its own language that only I can understand.

Who or what is your biggest fashion inspiration?

My biggest fashion inspiration is Asap Roxy. Flacko is honestly just dope, he makes everything look so effortless. Asap makes fashion look so easy. I also love Kanye West. Kanye may get bad publicity because of the use of his Yeezus line. But his “simple” trend has stayed notable and relevant.

What do you think the biggest misconception about your fashion may be- or do you think your style is understood by your peers?

The biggest misconception about my fashion is that what I wear is for other people. I don't dress for anyone but myself, I find what works for me and what I think represents who I am. My style is never understood which really shouldn't make sense to anyone else but me. I hear all the time my peers saying, “I could never pull this off.” Well, that's because it's my own sense of individuality that's defined by me.

Give us some insight into your Instagram and why you like dressing up and having undoubtedly cool photo shoots?

I like to always have meaning when I have my photoshoots. I do everything on my own and set up a space that tells a story. I may seem like a very outgoing person, but a lot of times I feel silenced and unheard. Being able to share my speech through a photo speaks more than a thousand words. In terms of dressing up , It just makes me feel good and powerful. Over time I learned and worked hard to understand and combine my two passions creating a mantra of art.

What’s your go to look?

My go to look would be the baggy, unapologetic look. I think the oversized look is just so freeing.

Least favorite look/ style trend right now?

My least favorite look right now is a matching jumpsuit or honestly jumpsuit for that matter.

Why do you think boys (especially college boys) are less inclined to express themselves through fashion?

I would say that being basic is easy. Dressing in a way that makes you invisible iis normally  what people want. I’ve learned that sometimes you have to take risks and stand out. I look at it as if you are standing in a group who dress the same, look the same, and act the same, how will anyone ever know what makes you different? Everyone has their own power and uniqueness but so many individuals are driven by the reigns of society limiting their true-selves.

Anything else you want to share with us?

Basic is boring. The individuals who work hard to express and work towards their dreams are people who change the world. How can we be better if no one steps up? Having style is more than what you wear, it's about how you wear it. We should all work towards being an inspiration to others for everyone to live their best life.
