I’m Graduating… Now What?
As the class of 2021 prepares to graduate amidst a pandemic, it’s only wise that they take a moment to think about programs offered around campus that may help set them apart as they enter the working world.
As a senior myself, I’ve compiled a list of resources that I have personally found to be helpful as I prepare to apply for jobs in what may be considered the most competitive job market due to the scarcity of openings.
The Student Professional Development Center (SPDC)
The SPDC is a resource that everyone hears about but seldom seeks out. Every communications student has or will have a visit from one of the center’s representatives during class to discuss procedures for building a resume. Some may assume that simply completing the project is enough, but if you really want to set yourself apart, I recommend setting up a time to have your resume destroyed in the most constructive way possible.
The SPDC also offers mock interviews so that you can build confidence in answering any questions that might be thrown at you during an interview. The counselor will also talk you through potential replies that would show a little of your personal flair and make you memorable compared to the other prospective employees.
Elon Job Network
The Elon Job Network is another super useful tool available to students. In addition to helping students find on-campus jobs, the EJN also includes internship opportunities—both in-person and virtual—as well as full-time positions. The lists are updated constantly, and subscribers receive a weekly email with all of the new opportunities and information on how to apply.
LinkedIn is vital in today’s search for careers. Not only does LinkedIn allow you to include in-depth descriptions of your prior experiences, but you’re also able to connect with other professionals as well as search for jobs within the website. LinkedIn offers a “quick apply” feature which is great for allowing you to “stick your foot in the door” and cold apply for jobs that you think may be interesting.
Also, don’t discount messaging professionals who you share a connection with. Many young professionals are more than willing to chat with you about opportunities within their company or just give general words of advice, especially if they’re an Elon alum.
These resources are only a few of many that Elon has to offer. Take some time to check them out and get a head start on developing your professional skills!
