Seeing Charleston: A Guide for the Non-Tourist

Known for being the South’s favorite city, Charleston is the epitome of Southern charm and hospitality. And, not to mention, it’s the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. This port city abounds with Civil War history, charming boutiques, colorful historic architecture, stunning skyline views and─oh, wait─did we mention the world-renowned food scene?

There’s much to see and even more to do. Whether you’re drooling over the pastel-colored Georgian-styled homes lining Rainbow Row, hitching rides on horse-drawn carriages through the French Quarter, grabbing a cocktail on The Vendu’s rooftop or exploring endless miles of some of the country’s most stunning coastlines, we can assure you that a trip to Charleston will never disappoint.

And while most of us would be perfectly content playing the role of tourist in this quaint metropolis, others might want to escape the beaten path and explore the many gems hidden throughout the peninsula. Lucky for you, we’ve already gathered a list of places only frequented by locals. If you’re planning a trip to Chucktown, be sure to include some of these destinations in your itinerary.

Fueling up, in Style.

Vacation or not, coffee is simply an unambiguous morning decision. And because most things are one-of-a-kind in this harbor town, searching for the nearest Starbucks is unheard of, not to mention highly discouraged.

Located off of King Street, Kudu is the local favorite coffee shop with an exterior that resembles that of a traditional Charleston home. Delicious brews─both coffee and beer─are offered, and guests are welcome to enjoy them inside or outside in the courtyard. While the interior offers a warm, rustic design, the outdoor space is decorated with string lights and loads of greenery.

Unlike a traditional cafe, Kudu does not have Wifi. Instead of welcoming students and locals glued to their computers or cell phones, Kudu encourages guests to engage in conversation and interaction with one another. The brews are good, and the human interaction is even better. Stop in if you’re looking for either.

It’s hard to define “weekend getaway” without some mention of the word “brunch,” most especially the act thereof. Brunch is simply a non-negotiable staple of any weekend away─it caters to our unhurried vacation mindsets of sleeping in and consolidates activities (breakfast and lunch) to allow for more room in our sightseeing schedules. And Félix, a French bistro located on King St. most famously known for its “cocktails et cuisine,” seems to understand that mentality perfectly.

Serving only the most authentic French cuisine and offering some of the most decadent craft cocktails, this local gem is one worth indulging at. The menu offers everything from your classic steak-frites to renditions of chicken confit. Oh, and the best burger in town.

The sophisticated decor of incandescent spherical light fixtures matched beautifully by white tile, wooden framework and tufted leather booths creates a relaxed, cozy atmosphere impressive to any guest. Between the cafe’s polished aesthetic and the friendly servers pressing your morning brew right in front of you, you’ll feel like you’re sitting pretty at a corner-side cafe in Paris. A tasteful, mimosa-filled brunch here will advance your weekend escape to a whole new level. We highly recommend it.

A Rooftop Kind of Evening.

While you may find a plethora of out-of-towners, we’d be remiss not to mention one of the peninsula’s most sought-after nighttime spots. The Vendue─the interior and the rooms alike─is a sight to see (and a phenomenal choice for lodging) in and of itself. But the rooftop exceeds typical rooftop expectations. With incredible views of the harbor, there’s no question why this venue has been awarded Charleston’s #1 rooftop bar for years on end.

Located in the Historic District, this charming hotel is placed serendipitously next to the Waterfront Park, which features the renowned Pineapple Fountain, and is just blocks from Rainbow Row─both of which are great areas to walk after enjoying a local spirit and appetizer.

If the views weren’t reason enough to make a visit, The Vendue also prides itself on delicious appetizers, such as flatbreads and dips, refreshingly exquisite cocktails and a chill yet sophisticated ambience─string lights and comfortable seating considered. Beers and local spirits are also available, and visitors will always be pleased to hear about the endless drink specials. Those over the age of 21 should definitely make a visit.

Reservations may not be accepted, but the rooftop is most definitely worth the wait if you have the time. And if you don’t have the time, we’d recommend making some! Views (and cocktails) don’t get much better than this.

Those interested in a less touristy, more retro vibe can check out The Watch, a rooftop restaurant/bar located at another Charleston favorite: The Restoration Hotel. Between the delectable small plates, matured cocktail menu and (unsurprisingly) incredible views, The Watch will never cease to impress. Even the editors at Condé Nast Traveler are fans.

Capitalizing on Picturesque Views.

It’s hard to be unimpressed with any visual offered in this picturesque city. Self-guided tours through the French Quarter and walks down the coastline alike are great opportunities to truly capitalize on the beauty offered in this Southern locale. But other less frequented spots are never bad ideas, especially when the views are unmatched.

Pitt Street Bridge is one of them. Located slightly outside of the city in Mount Pleasant, this local favorite is the perfect spot for reveling in a salty breeze, sighting dolphins and catching evening sunsets. Most embark on a walk down the bridge, which doesn’t lead to anything but a stunning overlook of the Charleston harbor and distant views of Sullivan’s Island. In traditional Charleston fashion, the bridge is lined with palm trees and locals with cameras. There’s truly no better spot to relax and revel in the surrounding beauty.

Shopping Like There’s Room in the Suitcase.

Whether you’re a sucker for local boutiques, big name brands or conventional destination gift shops, Charleston has got you covered. Most will spend their shopping time walking in and out of stores adorning King Street, while others might make their way to the Charleston City Market to check out the goods offered by local vendors─candles, paintings and hand-spun glass creations alike. Both locations are definitely worth checking out. Besides, you can’t leave without a souvenir, right?!

Wherever you choose to go in Charleston, you are guaranteed a weekend to remember. Oh, and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for dolphins!
