Reconnect With Your Body Through a Mindful Morning Routine

In the midst of a pandemic, a mindful morning routine may seem like a mundane thing to consider. In actuality, how we start our days can deeply impact our mood for the rest of the day. With mostly online classes, it’s easy to fall into the habit of rolling out of bed at the time of your first class and staying in your pajamas for the rest of the day (we’ve all been there).

However, multiple studies show that establishing healthy habits first thing in the morning can make you feel more productive throughout your entire day, positively impacting your mental health. Morning routines are helpful to set the tone for the rest of the day and can help us focus on our priorities and even help us to reconnect with our bodies.

Let’s talk about what I mean by reconnecting with your body. It’s easy to go about your day on autopilot, forgetting to care for your physical and mental health. Sometimes we walk around in a haze forgetting to check in with our bodies, especially nowadays. With so much of our lives being online, we sometimes fail to realize that we’ve lost a sense of connection with our body until we end up feeling worn out and overworked.

With the morning being such a precious time to set the mood for the rest of the day, it can be extremely beneficial to focus on re-syncing with our physical form to be able to enjoy a productive—but also mindful— day. Here’s how to incorporate mind-body connection into your routine.

  1. Try to avoid looking at your phone first thing in the morning. It gives you time to be with your mind and body instead of online.

  2. Drink a full glass of water. Doing one thing to take care of your body first thing in the morning gives you the momentum to be healthy for the rest of the day.

  3. Meditation and breathing exercises. Again, this helps you to take care of your mind before you begin your day. YouTube has plenty of morning meditations!

  4. Spend time outside, even for just a moment. Getting sun on your face in the morning is proven to help you sleep better at night. It doesn’t hurt that fresh air is always great, especially when you have to spend the rest of your day inside in online class.

  5. Indulge in a skincare routine. Taking the time to take care of your skin will give you clarity and peace of mind that you have done one thing all for yourself.
