Steps Towards Sustainability: Mussecco
Sustainability in the fashion industry has been a hot-button issue recently, and has changed the way I think about shopping. It is important to note that the fashion industry accounts for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions and almost 20% of wastewater. Many internet retailers choose to dump or burn clothes that are not purchased or are returned, causing a mass amount of unnecessary waste. Many of us believe that in order to shop sustainably we must either spend hours sifting through racks of thrift store finds, or break the bank. While it is important to us to stay on top of trends, we want to put our best fashion foot forward and look out for Mother Earth at the same time. So, we’re introducing you to a moderately sustainable company that is one of our best kept secrets.
Mussecco, formerly known as Mussier, is a trendy online clothing boutique, with a website covered in bright and ornate styles. This shop was featured on InStyle as “Best Unknown Boutique for Going Out Styles,” and has been adorned by celebrities from Real HouseWives of Miami’s Lisa Hochstein to Kylie Jenner. Mussecco offers a unique selection of pieces ranging from shoes and bags to dresses, tops, sweats, and sets. What sets Mussecco apart from other brands, in terms of sustainability, is that each item is made to order. This means that the company does not have warehouses of merchandise waiting to be shipped, but each time an order is placed a new piece is made. Additionally, Mussecco does not currently offer returns, when fashion returns are a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. While this may be frustrating for customers, it actually has considerable benefits for our planet.
I am overall happy with all three pieces I purchased from Mussecco and definitely would buy from this online shop again! I do wish that they provided images of the pieces on models, but if you dig around their instagram you can spot some of the pieces on different celebrities and women who post in their apparel.
The “New York Sweatpants” $60
I have mixed feelings about these sweatpants. I think if I was 5’6 I would be absolutely obsessed with them, however at 5’8 they’re just a teeny bit too short for me. This prevents me from choosing them from my closet as often as I’d like to. HOWEVER, the quality is fabulous and they’re very trend forward. I’m obsessed with the wide leg fit, plus the thigh slit makes them more edgy than your average sweatpant. I like to pair these with an oversized graphic tee or sweatshirt. However, the coming warmer days have made me want to pair them with a black tank or bodysuit and some docs for a more unique look.
SOLD OUT corset top $50
I do really love this top. I think it’s more unique than most of the long sleeve corset pieces I’ve seen on sites like Princess Polly or Urban Outfitters. I can see this fitting well on ladies with small- medium busts, but I don't think it’s big-boob-friendly. My qualm with this top is the strange material on the arms and back. It feels cheaper than the rest of the shirt, and the back is a bit see-through in a way that seems unintentional. However, this corset top is a great elevated staple piece in my wardrobe and can be paired with pants, skirts, and shorts alike.
The “Cannes Top” in black $40
Though I feel like this top is a bit overpriced for what it is, the quality is the best of these three pieces. I love the versatility and the subtle bustier detailing. The fabric is ribbed, thick, and supportive and the straps are sturdy, (though not adjustable). This top is definitely small boob friendly and comes in three additional colors, as well as a longer length.
