Vogue: The Essence of Fashion
We know the Met Gala, we love the magazines, even the idea of it is just so glamorous, Vogue is the essence of fashion. Now we at The Edge understand that is an opinion, but let us make our case.
Founded in 1892, Vogue was a dignified authentic journal of society, fashion, and the ceremonial side of life. The weekly newspaper was started by Arthur Baldwin Turnure, an American businessman in New York City. The first issue printed was dedicated to “the ceremonial side of life’ and was targeted at the stage as well as the debutant, men of affairs as well as the belle. What was created during the Gilded Age, a fashion time we now have seen in the 2022 Met Gala, has captured and influenced high society fashion and culture since its first publication.
There are 22 issues of Vogue across the world, including Vogue Arabia, Vogue Japan, and even Vogue Ukraine. Each Vogue magazine is responsible for shaping the newest fashion trends in high society and dictating what is fashionably acceptable. Their mission statement is “Vogue places fashion in the context of culture and the world we live in – how we dress, live, and socialize; what we eat, listen to and watch; who leads and inspires us. Vogue immerses itself in fashion, always leading readers to what will happen next.”
Each publication of the magazine follows the exact same format as the one published before. The word Vogue is in large letters at the top of the magazine cover in a specific font. Sometimes there are words across the front. Then there is just one photo on the front, a famous person who Vogue has deemed worthy of being on the cover. Getting chosen to be on the cover of a Vogue magazine is a huge deal. Since the magazine is one that is prestigious and well respected, being on the cover means that the individual is held in high regard, especially in the fashion world. It also means that the person has been deemed to be a clean, decent, and interesting person.
Since 1988, the very classy, very sophisticated Anna Wintour has been the editor-in-Chief of Vogue. She is the one who personally sends out invitations for the Met Gala, which one cannot attend if they do not get an invite, no matter how famous. She has created a name for herself in the high fashion industry where if you don’t get her approval, the odds that the trend or the design will stick are slim. She truly is the queen of fashion.
After laying out these points, it seems only justified to deem Vogue the essence of fashion. We know some might not agree, but we appreciate you taking the time to read why we think what we do. So when you go to read your next Vogue magazine, or you see your favorite celebrity on the front cover, you will know how special the multi-million dollar publication is in the world of fashion.
