Dublin in A Day
The Dublin Pub Crawl; Star of the County Down; Whiskey in a Jar; Rattlin’ Bog…if you haven’t heard these four songs have you really been to Ireland at all? The Emerald Isle; also known as one of the jolliest countries on planet earth, is home to more than catchy pub songs and whiskey but also fun folk songs and Guinness. The capital of this party-filled land is Dublin, and you absolutely can experience the city in just a day. So, if you’re looking for the perfect itinerary to rapidly experience all the goods a city has to offer in just under 24 hours, we’ve got you, love. We’ll even tell you exactly where you can hear those first four tunes…
MORNING
Start your day off right with an Irish street-food breakfast of potato cakes from a traditional, quaint little dive near O’Connell bridge called The Irish Potato Cake Company. The vibes really are immaculate here, and the potatoes are even better. Can you really say you’ve been to Dublin without raving about all the potatoes you’ve tried? The short answer is no.
Dublin is a really walkable city which is perfect for your day quest because you don’t have to spend a lot of time searching for a taxi or wasting away in an uber, you can simply just head across the bridge, 5-10 minutes down the road to Trinity College Dublin, Ireland’s oldest and most prestigious university. Located here is the Book of Kells, an extremely famous ancient Irish artifact and the Old Library of Trinity College, a perfect place to take an Instagram picture and bask in the dark academia aesthetic of it all. Tickets for this experience at the college are about 15 euros for students, and it's a great way to get your dose of classic Irish history before spending a good portion of the day drinking. The experience only takes about 30 minutes, and there is a great gift shop at the end.
Next, head over to Grafton Street, arguably Dublin’s most famous stretch of shops. Grafton Street is particularly popular for its street entertainment, specifically all the busking. So spend some time taking in the energy and watching not only some great music but also poets, mimes, and maybe even a magician or two. Plus, we find it very likely that after some time on Grafton street you can most definitely check off hearing Whiskey in A Jar and/or Star of the County Down.
MID-DAY
After doing some shopping and watching the buskers, find either your nearest taxi stand or call up an uber, (this is probably the only time you’ll have to), and head about 30-40 minutes outside the city to the neighboring seaside village of Howth. With beautiful cliffs, rocky beaches and a prime view of the Irish sea; spending a couple of hours in Howth is definitely a must. You can choose to do a cliff walk, search for sea glass, or simply grab a drink and admire the surprisingly blue water. If you are getting hungry though, we recommend stopping by O’Connells Pub & Restaurant to wind down after your daily fix of nature.
AFTERNOON
After some time by the sea, head back into Dublin either by train or taxi and then walk over to the Guinness Storehouse. Tickets are around 22 euros for students and definitely make sure you book in advance, just in case. An amazing brewery experience that tells the tale of Ireland’s most famous beer, the experience is probably most famously known for its rooftop bar with a gorgeous view of the city. Depending on what season you go, an afternoon session is perfect to get some sunset pics with the city gleaming behind you. With your ticket, you also get a free beer… so have potentially your first Guinness of the day in the best location. Treat the Guinness storehouse as a pregame for the pub crawl that's surely coming your way.
NIGHT
Before our final recommendation of the day, make sure to grab some dinner at The Old Mill, Temple Bar. The Old Mill is a prime location, has great drinks, and is only just a few steps away from the world-famous Temple Bar. After dinner, it’s time for your highly anticipated pub crawl. Instead of facilitating your own pub crawl, you can buy tickets to one online that is perfect for you. Group pub crawls are great because they know the best hidden gems and you get to jump the queue. Also, a lot of the time, you get a free drink or shot at each place. As the motto of many pub crawls is…you get to have the most you want to drink, for the cheapest you possibly can. Whatever your vibe is for the night, use that to choose the lineup that best serves that. Just make sure your crawl includes O’Flaherty’s Pub (The Old Storehouse), it has great live music and exceptional Bailey’s shots.
So, that said, we hope your day in Dublin is one of the luckiest ones yet, and make sure to let us know @theedgemag if you followed our recommendations.
And to sign off, we leave you with this…
Ho, ro, the rattlin' bog,
The bog down in the valley-o.
