Double Trouble: The Flynn Sisters
By Caroline Lane
Maddie Flynn ’20 and Morgan Flynn ’21 have grown up, quite literally, side-by-side. From grade school to high school they rode horseback together, wore matching outfits everyday, played soccer together and spent every moment together now, they both attend the same college.
Last fall, Morgan came to visit Maddie during family weekend and just one week later she spontaneously decided to apply ED and join her sister here at Elon. The two never imagined that they would end up at school together, but now they couldn’t picture it any other way.
“We spend everyday together, it’s weird to not see her,” Maddie said. “We eat a meal together or run errands or pick each other up from class.” In the words of both Maddie and Morgan, they have a “home away from home” here at Elon.
The two of them have become so inseparable, and have lived such parallel lives, that at times they can be confused to be twins. Despite the fact that one is a tall blonde and the other is a shorter brunette, they continue to be confused as twins.
“Growing up even close friends and family sometimes would confuse us for twins and sometimes would even think that I was the older sister,” Morgan said.
With the mention of sibling rivalry, Maddie instantaneously shot a glare at Morgan, stating that a sore subject had been brought up. “I don’t wanna talk about it,” Morgan laughed. Sibling rivalry exists, even among the closest of sisters.
Regardless of seniority their relationship has evolved greatly over the years. While they have done quite everything together, they weren’t always the best of friends. Growing up, they fought constantly and couldn’t stand each other, however, their relationship has evolved. “We get along better because we can tolerate each other for more than 15 seconds,” Morgan said.
They may be quick to call each other out but they also have each other’s backs., Their friends can attest to this.
Ryan Jacobs, Morgan’s longtime boyfriend and student at Miami University explained their relationship as a “love hate relationship, the two are always sassing each other but never leave each other's sides.”
The two sisters, while insanely similar, also have huge differences between them.
Kaylee Riemann ’20, a close friend of Maddie, has been able to watch the relationship of the two sisters evolve since Morgan arrived at Elon.
Maddie, according to her sister, is “sarcastic and mysterious and Morgan, according to her sister, is, “talkative and outgoing.” Their opposing personalities brilliantly mesh together and bring them closer together.
“Maddie and Morgan are really different in so many ways but at the same time so insanely similar,” Riemann said. “It’s what makes their relationship function so well.”
The Flynn sisters each have their own best friend on campus and they wouldn’t want it any other way.
“She’s a good companion,” Maddie said. “That sounds like we’re an old married couple but I guess in a way that’s how we act.”
Maddie and Morgan are thankful to have each other.,
“My favorite thing about Maddie is she spends time with me when one else wants to,” Morgan said.
As best friends, and as sisters, Maddie and Morgan have found their home at Elon; a testament to the power of sisterhood.
